IMPOSSIBLE CRUCIAL is my definition of everything that matters in life,
in this case preserving our environment and LIFE ON EARTH. SBCA 2013 In 1976 this pioneering exhibition broke art historical tradition and demonstrated how contemporary artists incorporate photographic methodology into their work.
Up until 1972, university art history departments did not recognize photography as an art form worthy enough to be placed in the pantheon of Art History. Then in 1972, Princeton created a chair specifically for the intense study of the Art History of Photography. David McAlpin funded the chair making it nice and comfortable for Peter Bunnell, the director of MoMA's photographic department, to move from the intensity of NYC to stimulating, yet sleepy Princeton. He did and I benefited from 2 years at Peter's graduate seminars: the highpoint of my educational life. This exhibition, funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, would never have taken place without those years at Princeton and the encouragement and support of Dennis Cate, the Director of the Rutgers Zimmerli Museum. PHOTOGRAPHIC PROCESS AS MEDIUM is now part of the Art History of Photography. |
